Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between a D.O. and M.D.?

A. Both Osteopathic doctors and Medical (allopathic) doctors attend 4 years of medical school followed by several years post medical school training in the field of their choice. Both Dr. Frank and Dr. Janet Kerrigan completed an MD Family Practice residency in the U.S. Navy and are Board Certified by the Allopathic (MD) certifying board.  DO's may specialize in any sub specialty in medicine, however, most tend to choose primary care.  DO's comprise only 10% of the physicians in the U.S., but take care of 20% of the patients in the U.S.  An osteopathic approach to medicine emphasizes the "whole patient" addressing the full spectrum of an individual's health needs.

Q. What is a Family Practice Doctor?

A. A Family doctor is a specialist who has completed 4 years of medical school, followed by 3 years of residency, with intensive training in all the fields of primary care, including internal medicine, pediatrics, ob-gyn, psychiatry and geriatrics.  Family doctors are skilled to treat most medical problems that come to their office.  When referrals are needed the family physician will coordinate the appropriate referral and act as the patient's quarterback providing support and follow-up.

Q. What is a Nurse Practitioner (N.P.)?

A. A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse who has completed additional training in medicine. They usually have the equivalent of a masters degree. Most have previous medical experience in nursing, and are very knowledgeable about medicine and caring for patients. They are known for being compassionate and thorough professionals.

Nurse Practitioners perform many of the duties of a physician and are supervised by physicians. Most specialize in family medicine, others specialize in fields such as Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN) or pediatrics.

Q. What is a Physicians Assistant (P.A.)?

A. A Physicians Assistant has 2 years post-graduate training in medicine, equivalent to a masters degree. Most Physicians Assistants have medical backgrounds before going to P.A. school. Both P.A.'s and N.P.'s are supervised by physicians. They are used in virtually all specialties of medicine and function much the same as a physician.

Q. What languages are spoken at Kerrigan Family Medical Group?

A. English and Spanish.
